THE FIRST
BOOK

A note before you begin

This book does not ask you to believe anything. It only asks that you notice what changes when you give an ordinary moment a little more attention.

Keep what is useful. Leave the rest untouched. The rituals in these pages were written as small, original practices for intention, memory, play, and reflection.

Selected pages

Four rituals from the first edition

A few pages to read slowly, save in your mind, or return to when the moment is right.

Ritual № 001

The Red Thread

A ritual for walking into rooms that frighten you.

There are rooms that make us forget the shape of our own voice. This is not a charm against nerves. It is a small way to remember that you arrived with a life behind you, and you may take up space in the room ahead.

You will need

  • A short length of red thread
  • A pocket or wrist
  • One quiet minute

The ritual

  1. 1.Before you leave, hold the thread between both hands and think of one thing you know how to do well.
  2. 2.Tie a single knot, not too tightly, and place it where you can feel it without anyone noticing.
  3. 3.At the door, let your hand find the knot before you go in.

Do not untie it. Cut it.

Ritual № 003

The Borrowed Coin

A ritual for inviting opportunity without chasing it.

A coin is only a small piece of metal until it changes hands. Keep one nearby when you are waiting for an answer, preparing an ask, or wondering whether to make the first move. Let it remind you that opportunity has somewhere to go.

You will need

  • One coin
  • Your left shoe
  • A day with somewhere to go

The ritual

  1. 1.Choose a coin you did not buy for yourself: found, given, or borrowed for the day.
  2. 2.Put it beneath the insole of your left shoe before you leave home.
  3. 3.When an opening appears, answer plainly before you decide what it means.

Spend the coin only when the opportunity arrives.

The Unsent Letter

A ritual for releasing something that has already ended.

Some endings keep asking to be revised. Write the version you will not send: the clear one, the ungracious one, the one that says what happened without making a case for it. This page is for you, not for proof.

You will need

  • Paper
  • An envelope
  • A candle or ordinary match, if you like

The ritual

  1. 1.Write the name of the ending at the top of the page.
  2. 2.Give it one page only. Stop when you reach the edge.
  3. 3.Fold the letter, put it in the envelope, and write today’s date on the back.

Do not read the letter again.

The First Wear

A ritual for deciding what a new garment will remember about you.

Clothes learn the weather of a life: the train platform, the difficult dinner, the afternoon that changed its mind. Before you wear something new into the world, choose a beginning for it that you would be glad to repeat.

You will need

  • Something unworn
  • A small mirror
  • Your own reflection

The ritual

  1. 1.Put the garment on when you are not rushing anywhere.
  2. 2.Stand by a window or mirror and name one thing you want to carry more lightly.
  3. 3.Wear it first for an ordinary pleasure: flowers, coffee, a walk, a friend.

Let its first memory be a good one.
